Interesting summary of how Windows memory arguments work

At work, there's been some debate on how best to structure our J2EE servers to maximise utilisation of a scarce resource (per-CPU licenses!). The crux of the debate centered, for some reason, on how we can allocate more JVM instances per server.

The Dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities that some consider unnatural...

I'm shocked at myself... I'm downloading the Visual Studio C# beta! And I want to use it! Argh!

(Writing utilities, with GUIs, that manipulate objects via COM is not a task Java is intended for, I'm afraid...)

I feel this guy's pain

I know what Jeff Atwood is complaining about here. It can be really hard to track down a decent programming keyboard these days.

Update: I actually found one: the Belkin Wireless Keyboard. Amazingly enough, I found it at Big W, for only AU$60. I'm a little dubious about the wireless factor (I just know the battery will die some day when it's really inconvenient), but it's a nice responsive keyboard, and the keys are where they should be. The bundled wireless mouse will be a good "pairing mouse" as well - the fact that it doesn't have a cable is a real plus for a pairing mouse, and means I can keep using my trackball

Why software development is not a profession

Software development is not a profession. It will never be a profession while people like the guy who wrote this lovely piece continue to get paid to develop software.

The reason, of course, is that professions have the requirement that professionals be competent.

Fortunately, I'm happy being a software craftsman
